Douglas Laboratories focuses on developing strong relationships with key opinion leaders in integrative and complementary medicine. Our clinical advisors collaborate closely with our team and provide clinical expertise and input on formulation concepts. This enables us to create products that are not only backed by science, but are also practical and clinically relevant. Representing a wide variety of healthcare specialties, our clinical advisors add value to Douglas Laboratories’ product development and clinical education initiatives.

Kristi Belohlavek, R.D.

Kristi Belohlavek is a Registered Dietitian and an active member of the Dietitians in Integrative and Functional Medicine Practice Group. After practicing clinical dietetics for five years, she became the Territory Manager in the Douglas Laboratories sales division, and was later promoted to her current role as the Director of Product Development and Clinical Education. In addition to developing science-based formulas, she coordinates the clinical education webinars and provides product support and training to the sales team.

Leslie J. Bonci, MPH, R.D., CSSD, LDN

Health Function: Klean Athlete

Leslie J. Bonci is the owner of Active Eating, a nutrition consulting company that encourages clients to “Be fit, fed and fearless.” She has also worked as a nutrition consultant for Major League Baseball’s® Pittsburgh Pirates® and Toronto Blue Jays®, in addition to Carnegie Mellon University® Athletics, and the NFL’s® Kansas City Chiefs®. Leslie worked as a sports dietician for the Pittsburgh Steelers® for 24 years, and has also worked with the NHL’s® Pittsburgh Penguins® and MLB’s® Washington Nationals®. [...]

Peter Bongiorno, N.D., LAc

Health Function: Cognitive & Mood

Dr. Bongiorno is president of the NY Association of Naturopathic Physicians and co-medical director of Inner Source Health in New York with his wife, Dr. Pina LoGiudice. In 2010, he authored the first comprehensive textbook designed to teach physicians how to use natural medicine for mood support. Dr. Bongiorno has been regularly interviewed on national television and radio as a natural medicine expert, and writes articles for national media, including Psychology Today.

Julie Chen, M.D.

Health Function: Foundation

Dr. Chen is a fellowship-trained, board-certified integrative medicine physician with her company, Making Healthy EZ in San Jose, California. Dr. Chen has a background in internal medicine and has published clinical research, contributed to medical textbooks, served on various medical expert panels, and been featured on national radio and TV programs. She also has been regularly published in national magazines, newspapers, and health and wellness websites.

Victoria Coleman, D.C., IFMCP

After successfully running two wellness clinics, Dr. Coleman became the president of Douglas Laboratories Canada for 14 years. She is currently the Vice President of Clinical Education for Atrium Innovations, where her mission is to further the use of nutraceuticals for health promotion through education and service. Dr. Coleman’s constant pursuit of learning allowed her to complete her Certification in Functional Medicine through the Institute for Functional Medicine.

Joseph J. Collins, N.D., R.N.

Health Function: Hormone

The President and Co-founder of Your Hormones, Inc., Dr. Collins has been directly involved in advancing the practice of natural hormone health since 1993. His functional endocrinology clinical practice focuses on adrenal health, thyroid and blood sugar function, as well as support for menopause, andropause, and PMS. He has extensive experience in the advanced use of adaptogens to support and balance hormone function.

Geo Espinosa, N.D., L.Ac., C.N.S.

Health Function: Foundation

Dr. Espinosa is noted for his expertise in naturopathic urology, as well as prostate and bladder function. He received his degree from the University of Bridgeport and spent five years at the Center for Holistic Urology at Columbia University Medical Center. In 2009, he founded the Integrative Urology Center at New York University Langone Medical Center.

Martin P. Gallagher, M.D., D.C.

Health Function: Bone & Joint

Dr. Gallagher has the unique distinction of being triple licensed as a board-certified family physician, chiropractor and medical acupuncturist. He is the clinic director of Medical Wellness Associates, a multidisciplinary integrative health care facility located just outside of Pittsburgh. He is an international lecturer and has authored several books, including the best-selling “Dr. Gallagher’s Guide to 21st Century Medicine.”

Andrew Halpner, Ph.D.

Dr. Andrew Halpner received his PhD in Nutrition from the Tufts University School of Nutrition Science and Policy and has been working in the dietary supplement field for almost 20 years. His research and interests have focused on antioxidant nutrients, including their interactions and abilities to prevent and treat age-related degenerative conditions. Dr. Halpner has extensive knowledge and expertise in product formulation and the raw materials and technologies used to create cutting-edge nutritional supplements. Dr. Halpner has lectured nationally and internationally on various topics pertaining to nutrition and has authored numerous research articles.

Daniel Kalish, D.C.

Health Function: Digestive

Over the past 25 years, Daniel Kalish has directed three integrative health clinics in California, where he has coordinated teams of medical doctors, nutritionists, chiropractors and acupuncturists. Dr. Kalish is dedicated to teaching doctors Functional Medicine philosophy and practices. Through The Kalish Institute’s educational programs, he has trained over 1,000 practitioners worldwide in The Kalish Method, which solves patient challenges through a proven, lab-based approach. He is the author of three books, “The Five Pillars to Building a Successful Practice,” “The Kalish Method: Healing the Body Mapping the Mind” and “Your Guide to Healthy Hormones,” and is a frequently requested speaker for integrative medicine conferences across the United States.

Penny Kendall-Reed, N.D.

Penny Kendall-Reed is a Naturopathic Doctor in Toronto. After graduating from McGill University with a B.Sc. in Neurobiology, she earned a degree in Naturopathic Medicine from the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine, where she received the Dr. Allen Tyler Award for Most Outstanding Clinician. In 2013 she was voted Naturopath of the Year by her peers and colleagues. Dr. Kendall-Reed is the co-author of five national bestselling books including "The New Naturopathic Diet." She travels throughout world lecturing on neuro-endocrine related diseases, metabolic disorders and genetics. She appears regularly on television, magazine and radio across Canada and the United States addressing various health issues, and is a monthly health expert for several magazines, including Health and Wellness Magazine and Best Health in Toronto. Dr. Kendall-Reed is a medical consultant for Douglas Laboratories, creating product formulations and overseeing the neuro-metabolic department. She has also designed an all-natural oral and topical anti-aging skin care line sold throughout Europe. Penny Kendall-Reed is presently the director of natural therapies at the Urban Wellness Clinic in Toronto.

Shelena Lalji, M.D.

Health Function: Beauty

Known as “Dr. Shel,” Shelena Lalji is the founder and medical director of the Dr. Shel Wellness & Aesthetic Center in Sugar Land, Texas. Dr. Shel is a board-certified obstetrician and gynecologist. She is a national trainer and an international speaker on several integrative/functional medicine topics and on advanced aesthetic treatments. Dr. Shel is a published author and an advocate for her patients and her local community, as well as a firm believer in addressing the root causes of her patients' health and well-being.

Angela Mazza, D.O.

Health Function: Heart & Metabolic

Dr. Mazza is board-certified in endocrinology, diabetes & metabolism, as well as internal medicine, and currently practices in the Central Florida area. She sees medicine not as a “one size fits all” but requiring an individualized approach through patient education and lifestyle management. She has a significant background in both basic and clinical research, and has been principal investigator on multiple large-scale therapy and device trials.

Nigel Plummer, PhD

Health Function: Genestra HMF Probiotics

A key probiotic contributor, Dr. Plummer has worked at Pfizer in R&D and has extensive knowledge in the field. His research has resulted in collaborations with research institutes and universities within the U.K. and Europe, enabling Dr. Plummer to develop his expertise in probiotics and fish oils.

Stuart Richer, O.D., Ph.D., FAAO

Health Function: Vision

Dr. Stuart Richer is a practicing optometrist and clinical antioxidant researcher with special interests in aging adults and ocular nutrition. An internationally recognized speaker and the principle investigator of trials published on lutein and zeaxanthin for vision, Dr. Richer has co-formulated a line of supplements with Douglas Laboratories to specifically address age-related visual health.

Barry W. Ritz, Ph.D.

Dr. Ritz is the Chief Scientific Officer at Atrium Innovations, Inc. Dr. Ritz is a member of the American Society for Nutritional Sciences and executive board of the Council for Responsible Nutrition’s Medical Affairs Subcommittee. A former professor at Drexel University, Dr. Ritz is an expert in nutritional immunology and has numerous publications in scientific journals.

Jacob Teitelbaum, M.D.

Health Function: Heart & Metabolic

Dr. Teitelbaum is a board-certified internist and has been a nationally recognized expert in the fields of fatigue and sleep management for the past 30 years. He is also the founder of the Practitioners Alliance Network and author of numerous books. Dr. Teitelbaum is the lead author of four studies on the effective management of fatigue, and has developed the S.H.I.N.E. approach to help patients maintain healthy energy levels. He frequently makes media appearances and conducts speaking engagements, and lives in Kona, Hawaii.
