The Patented VESIsorb Technology Provides Enhanced Solubility
Ubiquinol plays an important role in antioxidant, energy and cardiovascular function, and may be of special importance for older adults in supporting the normal aging process. Ubiquinone, also known as coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10), is typically converted in the body into ubiquinol. Recent studies indicate that as people age, the body is ability to convert ubiquinone to ubiquinol declines.
The absorption of Coenzyme Q10 depends on two processes:
- The dissolution of CoQ10 in physiological fluids
- The absorption process itself (CoQ10 in solution enters the cells at the absorption site and finally enters general blood circulation)
Absorption can be acheived through:
- Passive diffusion
- Facilitated or active transport which involves the expenditure of energy into the body
To assist in the absorption process, Douglas Laboratories® utilizes patented VESIsorb® technology to enhance the extent of dissolution.
- The VESIsorb® technology is broken down into three steps:
- Formation of the colloidal delivery system. When mixed with an aqueous system (such as the GI-lumen), this unique lipid-based formulation forms a nanocolloid delivery system containing solubilized CoQ10. A nanocolloid droplet is typically less than 100 nm in diameter and consists of a monolayer with the CoQ10 within its core.
- Diffusion of the solubilized CoQ10 across the unstirred water layer
- Transfer of the solubilized CoQ10 to the absorptive surface of the intestine
